Why we do what we do.

One of the great things about doing what I do (see www.b1g1.com) is that I have the awesome privilege of making a difference and of impacting people.

That’s why this ‘post’ is an important one — it may just impact you!

It’s the story of David Hickey, a Dentist in Chorley in the UK. David’s much more than a Dentist — he’s a PAIN-FREE Dentist.

A few weeks ago he came to one of my UK programs. The impact was clear from the moment we started. And there was no surprise at all when he decided to belong to B1G1 before the program ended. So now he’s giving in the most interesting of ways (see http://www.b1g1.com/buy1give1/pain-free-giving)

But what’s really interesting is how one part of our live program impacted on David. Here’s how he puts it:

“One of the first questions asked when you meet someone new is ‘What do you do?’ Very rarely are you asked ‘why do you do what you do?’, which is often far more interesting.

My name is David Hickey and I am a Dentist. Now this statement is a little dull don’t you think? Hopefully when I have told you why I am a Dentist it will be a little more interesting.

Everyone needs a reason to get out of bed in the morning to go and do what they do. For those people who say money is that reason they get out of bed, my observation is that they are rarely getting much satisfaction from their job. Considering the amount of time that we spend in work I think that you should enjoy what you do and feel rewarded whilst doing it.

One of the main reasons I became a Dentist is to do with happiness. Our mouths are the most obvious indicator of our happiness — whenever you feel happy you smile. The great thing about smiles is that they are infectious. And more often than not when you see someone smiling, you will too.

Early on I discovered that I got the most happiness and satisfaction in life by making other people happy and seeing them smile. Dentistry, I feel, is the perfect environment to create smiles and happiness.

The happiness of the patients who come to Southport Road Dental is paramount to me on a number of levels. As a client you should experience a number of things that will contribute to your smile. Firstly, how you are treated and made to feel within the practice. I believe that each and every person should be treated as an individual and that your care must be tailored to you and that you have a right to choose what is right for you in any given situation.

I would get very little satisfaction from what I do if I didn’t do it to the best of my ability. If you have any treatment carried out you won’t be happy if that work isn’t done well. I believe that everyone has the right to smile and to have a smile that they want the world to see. This belief has led me to find my passion in restorative dentistry, the feeling of seeing someone’s smile that has been restored to its former glory is one that, for me, is hard to beat.

A big part of why I am a Dentist is to try and help change people’s perceptions about Dentists. Anyone who has enough trust in what I do to walk through the practice door is entitled to pain free Dentistry. Every day I meet people who are terrified of coming to the Dentist due to a previous experience they have had.

The truth is that there is a pain free solution for anyone in need of dental treatment. One of the biggest highs I feel in the day is the look of amazement on a client’s face when they realise that their treatment is over and they haven’t felt a thing.

Knowing that each day there is a group of people who will come into my practice who trust me and depend on the care that I give to their smiles is more than enough to get me out of bed each and every day.

The whole team at Southport Road Dental believe that we have a shared purpose in delivering happiness to the people who come through our door. By delivering happiness we get it back and this is the key to our success as a team.”

Brilliant stuff isn’t it? And notice the key point — it’s not about excelling in service. It’s about delivering happiness, first to ourselves by following our ‘why’, then by leading the team by giving them an even higher purpose and then finally by engaging the client or customer in the whole process.

Sounds like a great recipe to me. And you?? Let me know your thoughts — they’re really important.
